Heavy-duty drives fail differently than light ones. A multiple-belt drive with one stretched belt loads the others unevenly; a taper lock bushing seated incorrectly will work loose under torque; and a gear coupling that looks fine from the outside can be running on worn teeth. At this level, the work is less about assembling a drive than about reading what a running one is telling you and correcting it before the line stops.
This course covers installing, adjusting, aligning, tensioning, operating, troubleshooting, maintaining, and analyzing heavy-duty mechanical power transmission drive systems. You will work with motors and shafts; gear, grid, and flange couplings; QD, taper-lock, and split-taper bushings; multiple V-belt, timing, and HTD synchronous belt drives; and heavy-duty and silent chain drives. You will follow mechanical drive troubleshooting safety rules, perform reverse dial indicator shaft alignment, select and size components for a given application, identify a component from its model number, and identify and correct component wear. The course also covers V-belt maintenance, chain selection, and proper lubrication practices.
This course prepares you to test for the Smart Automation Certification Alliance (SACA) C-301 Mechanical Power Systems 2 certification.
