This program, offered in partnership with WE Build Waterloo (Hawkeye Community College and Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity), prepares sponsored students with foundational skills for construction trades. Key components include:
- Basic Safety: Covers jobsite safety, common causes of workplace incidents, personal protective equipment, and OSHA 10 certification.
- Construction Math: Reviews essential math skills like measurement systems, decimals, fractions, and geometry.
- Hand and Power Tools: Introduces tools used in construction, focusing on operation, maintenance, and safety.
- Construction Drawings: Teaches interpretation of construction drawings, symbols, and dimensions.
- Basic Rigging (Elective): Covers rigging hardware, safe working habits, and operations.
- Communication and Employability Skills: Focuses on effective communication, problem-solving, and positive workplace interactions.
- Materials Handling: Addresses safety in handling materials and using related equipment.
Graduates receive the NCCER Core Curriculum: Introductory Craft Skills certification, Construction Safety certification, and OSHA 10 certification, equipping them for further education in construction crafts.
