Introduction to Construction Trades

This program, offered in partnership with WE Build Waterloo (Hawkeye Community College and Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity), prepares sponsored students with foundational skills for construction trades. Key components include:

• Basic Safety: Covers jobsite safety, common causes of workplace incidents, personal protective equipment, and OSHA 10 certification.
• Construction Math: Reviews essential math skills like measurement systems, decimals, fractions, and geometry.
• Hand and Power Tools: Introduces tools used in construction, focusing on operation, maintenance, and safety.
• Construction Drawings: Teaches interpretation of construction drawings, symbols, and dimensions.
• Basic Rigging (Elective): Covers rigging hardware, safe working habits, and operations.
• Communication and Employability Skills: Focuses on effective communication, problem-solving, and positive workplace interactions.
• Materials Handling: Addresses safety in handling materials and using related equipment.

Graduates receive the NCCER Core Curriculum: Introductory Craft Skills certification, Construction Safety certification, and OSHA 10 certification, equipping them for further education in construction crafts.
