The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Basic Rider Course is a comprehensive learn-to-ride program that includes the online MSF Basic eCourse for basic motorcycle knowledge, five hours of classroom instruction with a RiderCoach focusing on rider perception and risk management, and 10 hours of on-cycle, hands-on instruction. Motorcycles are provided for the course, and prior to the first day, students must read the Rider Handbook and complete the eCourse online. The eCourse price is included, and students will receive a redemption code via email two weeks before the class. Riders must be able to balance a bicycle to participate in the riding portion and must pass both a written and a riding skills test to receive a DOT certificate of completion. Completing the course may also qualify students for an insurance discount. This course is required by Iowa law for residents under 18 to obtain a motorcycle operator’s license. Minors must have a valid driver’s permit and written consent from a parent or guardian at the time of registration. Registrations for minors under 18 are completed in person at Hawkeye’s Cedar Falls Center.
