CourseGraphic Hawkeye Bot Builders Academy immerses high-school students in robotics and advanced manufacturing. Working in teams, students will build and program the open-source PAROL6 robot arm—an industrial-style, 3D-printed desktop arm that pairs state-of-the-art electronics with mechanical design to achieve smooth, high-speed motion. The platform’s control software, GUI and CAD/STL files are fully open-source, making it perfect for education, research and small automation projects.
Beyond construction, students will learn foundational theory through lectures on electrical installation, robotics fundamentals, industrial manufacturing processes, programming and safety. They will also gain hands-on experience with professional Amatrol trainers to develop skills in measurement, PLCs, and automation. Throughout the six weeks, teams will assemble their robots, configure electronics, calibrate motion and write control programs. The course emphasises teamwork, problem-solving, and project-based learning, culminating in demonstrations of each group’s working robot arm.
Hawkeye Bot Builders Academy is offered in collaboration with SHIPHT: Advancing Opportunity in Career & Technical Education & Entrepreneurship, which focuses on opening pathways for low-income students, first-generation college students and students with disabilities. Scholarships are available through SHIPHT (see https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScKRyjHIk5xbzdxFZhB9ff_kdHXGuRMuqN9n4xsLI2fTsaViA/viewform) to ensure that cost is not a barrier. Students leave the academy with practical experience in robotics and advanced manufacturing and an understanding of how open-source platforms like PAROL6 are shaping the future of industry.
