CDL Test 1: Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection

DOT certified third party testing is available for individuals seeking to obtain a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License. Class A or B CDL testing has three phases: Pre-Trip, Skills Test, and Road Test. The tests must be taken and passed in this sequence to receive a Commercial Driver's License. After you've passed the knowledge test, obtained and held the Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) for at least 14 days you can take the Class A or B Test 1: Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection.  You may schedule the test time upon receiving your CLP. You must have the CLP for 14 days before testing. Cost of each test is $100 per attempt. Failing any one test will require a re-test at the additional cost of $100 per testing occurrence. 

Hawkeye provides your testing vehicle. If you choose to use your own vehicle, it is required to be in good working condition and is representative of the class of license you are applying for.  A pre-trip vehicle inspection test is required to show the vehicle is safe to drive. You will have to walk around the vehicle and point to or touch each item and explain what you are checking and why. (You will not have to crawl under the hood of the vehicle.)

Review section 11 in the Commercial Driver License Manual to prepare for and successfully pass the pre-trip vehicle inspection test. 
  • You must successfully demonstrate all three components of the airbrake check as a part of the pre-trip vehicle inspection test . Prepare for this test by reviewing the information in section 11.
  • If you do not pass the airbrake check and/or the pre-trip vehicle inspection test, you must register again for School Bus Test 1: Pre-Trip Vehicle inspection and make another appointment to retake the test.
