To coach K-12 school-sponsored athletics in Iowa, you must be certified. Hawkeye offers courses that meet the State of Iowa requirements for coaching authorization certification.

To apply for your coaching license you must:
  1. Successfully complete the coaching authorization class.
  2. Apply to the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners for your license.
  3. Submit payment to the State of Iowa for your license and background investigation.

This course takes place over two weekends, called Power Weekends and includes the following classes: Ethics, Care & Prevention of Injuries, Human Growth & Development, Anatomy & Physiology, and Theory of Coaching. Every effort will be made to bring major sports issues to the class. This program does not teach sport specific coaching. Successful completion of this course will allow you to apply to the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners Licensure and upon their approval, you will be licensed to coach athletics in Iowa's K-12 schools. If you do not pass a background check you will not receive licensure. There is an additional fee of $160 that will be due to the state when applying for licensure. The $375 is an all-inclusive fee other than the $160. You must provide two rolls of athletic tape and a roll of pre-wrap.
